Prentice Penny, currently the showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s comedy series Insecure, has been tapped to craft the screenplay for a feature based on true events involving the Compton Cowboys, a group of African American kids who grew up surrounded by gangs and violence in Compton, and who found rescue and purpose through their love of horses.
The pic is set up at Fox Searchlight, which acquired the life rights of the Compton Cowboys, as well as a book proposal by Walter Thompson-Hernandez.
Through riding horses at a ranch in their neighborhood, the kids form unexpected friendships and change the trajectory of their lives, and continue their legacy 30 years later . . .
