Anuradha Koirala is the founder of Maiti Nepal Organization. Here, they help women of all ages vulnerable to sex trafficking, exploitation, and abuse. Having overcome physical abuse from her ex-husband, she felt the need to empower women in similar predicaments. At seventy years of age, her twenty-six-year-old organization has prevention homes for those at risk, efforts at the India-Nepal border and transit homes for the rescued.
“When I see their pain – their mental pain as well as physical pain – it is so troubling that I cannot turn myself away. This gives me the strength to fight and root this crime out,” she said in a phone interview (Deonath & Gralki, 2019).
Maiti Nepal helps in apprehension and prosecution of human trafficking offenders. Koirala’s work gets acknowledgment, as seen in international recognition and funding from CNN.
