ICYMI: Hurricane Ida hits, a bombing in Kabul, and more

Hurricane Ida kills one and leaves Louisiana in darkness

Hurricane Ida slammed the New Orleans coast as a Category 4 storm on Sunday. It withered to a Category 2 on Sunday night and is expected to be a tropical storm by Monday. But it has already killed one person and left nearly one million people in Louisiana without power on Sunday night. The hurricane arrived on the 16th anniversary of the devastating Hurricane Katrina. It could spread through Mississippi and the Tennessee Valley on Monday.

Suicide bombing at Kabul airport kills 170 people and 13 U.S. service members

A suicide bomber detonated explosives at a Kabul airport gate on August 26 where U.S. troops were searching evacuees who were fleeing Afghanistan. The attack killed 170 people and 13 U.S. service members. Most of the latter group were in their early 20s, confirmed the Defense Department. The mass killing occurred at a time when the Taliban seized power over the country, causing widespread fear about their militant policies that are considered human rights violations. On Sunday, the U.S. and 97 other countries said they would continue taking in people leaving Afghanistan even after the American military departs. They also claimed to have an agreement with the Taliban to allow safe passage to those leaving even after the August 31 deadline.
