FDA approves booster shots for employees in high-risk job settings

The Food and Drug Administration greenlit Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots for people working in high-risk conditions like teachers, health care workers, and grocery store employees. It is a significant move away from an advisory panel’s rejection of the booster for this group of people. The panel only approved the booster for senior citizens and for adults with underlying health risks. But the FDA has the final say.

Amtrak passenger train derails and kills three

An Amtrak passenger train in Montana derailed on Sunday, killing three people and injuring dozens. Eight of the ten cars derailed, and Amtrak said in a statement that 141 passengers and 17 crew members were aboard at the time. No official reason has been given for the accident.

Arizona recount confirms Biden’s win

In a striking blow to President Donald Trump’s allegations of election fraud in the 2020 presidential race, a Republican-commissioned review of over 2 million ballots cast in Arizona confirmed President Joseph Biden’s victory. The count re-evaluated votes cast in Maricopa County, according to a final report released on Friday.

German elections begin and mark end of Merkel’s reign

Germany’s parliamentary elections began on Sunday. It showed that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 16-year run is coming to an end. The two major contenders for her position are candidates from Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union and the center-left Social Democratic Party.

SATC actor Willie Garson passes away

Willie Garson, a mainstay of American pop culture who was most famous for his role as Carrie Bradshaw’s best friend Stanford Blatch in Sex and the City, died in the afternoon of Sep. 21. His New York Times obituary confirmed the cause of death as pancreatic cancer. Garson had already filmed scenes for the SATC reboot And Just Like That…. He was 57.
